چکیده

We consider the problem of minimizing the total flow time of a set of unit sized jobs in a discrete time model, subject to a temperature threshold. Each job has its release time and its heat contribution. At each time step the temperature of the processor is determined by its temperature at the previous time step, the job scheduled at this time step and a cooling factor. We show a number of lower bound results, including the case when the heat contributions of jobs are only marginally larger than a trivial threshold. Then we consider a form of resource augmentation by giving the online algorithm a higher temperature threshold, and show that the Hottest First algorithm can be made 1-competitive, while other common algorithms like Coolest First cannot. We also give some results in the offline case.

A comparison of algorithms for minimizing the sum of earliness and tardiness in hybrid flow-shop scheduling problem with unrelated parallel machines and sequence-dependent setup times

In this paper, the flow-shop scheduling problem with unrelated parallel machines at each stage as well as sequence-dependent setup times under minimization of the sum of earliness and tardiness are studied. The processing times, setup times and due-dates are known in advance. To solve the problem, we introduce a hybrid memetic algorithm as well as a particle swarm optimization algorithm combine...

Minimizing Makespan with Start Time Dependent Jobs in a Two Machine Flow Shop

[if gte mso 9]> The purpose of this paper is to consider the problem of scheduling a set of start time-dependent jobs in a two-machine flow shop, in which the actual processing times of jobs increase linearly according to their starting time. The objective of this problem is to minimize the makespan. The problem is known to be NP-hardness[ah1] ; therefore, there is no polynomial-time algorithm...

On Multiprocessor Temperature-Aware Scheduling Problems

We study temperature-aware scheduling problems under the model introduced by Chrobak et al. in [6]. We consider a set of parallel identical processors and three optimization criteria: makespan, maximum temperature and (weighted) average temperature. On the positive side, we present polynomial time approximation algorithms for the minimization of the makespan and the maximum temperature, as well...

A New ILP Model for Identical Parallel-Machine Scheduling with Family Setup Times Minimizing the Total Weighted Flow Time by a Genetic Algorithm

This paper presents a novel, integer-linear programming (ILP) model for an identical parallel-machine scheduling problem with family setup times that minimizes the total weighted flow time (TWFT). Some researchers have addressed parallel-machine scheduling problems in the literature over the last three decades. However, the existing studies have been limited to the research of independent jobs,...

Minimizing Maximum Flow-time on Related Machines

We consider the online problem of minimizing the maximum flow-time on related machines. This is a natural generalization of the extensively studied makespan minimization problem to the setting where jobs arrive over time. Interestingly, natural algorithms such as Greedy or Slow-fit that work for the simpler identical machines case or for makespan minimization on related machines, are not O(1)-c...
